The Baroque era
occurred between 1650 and 1750. Originating in Italy and spread through Western
Europe, the era arose with an intense Catholic Reformation, rise of a middle
class, increase in worldly knowledge, and scientific discovery (Fiero 259). The goals of Baroque artists were to increase the dramatization
of religious subjects by making the viewers feel that they were participating
in the Christian events (Fiero 262). To increase the drama within their
artwork, artists would add dynamic motion, exaggerated gestures, theatrical
staging, energy, and many more effects.
